s, but also aim to be places
of the furthering of theological thought.
Thus, | have concluded my study with an overview of the curriculums of two major
theological schools, being particularly interested in how the subject of preaching is
introduced. | have highlighted that students are being taught the discipline of homiletics,
with the main emphasis on biblical exegesis and rhetoric, based primarily on materials,
developed by authors from an Anglo-American context, therefore lacking or neglecting
the understanding of the ecclesial tradition they are coming from (or planning to
minister to), which inevitably contributes to the still un-bridged chasm between the
Church and the University.
My concluding recommendation was for the schools to introduce deeper studies
of the Baptist identity, as well as perform a shift in their approach to the theological task,
which needs to be seen as a discovery, an interpretation, and the potential correction of
the convictions of the church. | believe these amendments would result in a deeper
understanding, and therefore, in a greater appreciation by the academic institutions of
the existing convictions and practices of local churches, and, hence, make further study
and development (of both the Church and the University) possible.
To conclude, | can say that this thesis was the very first attempt to engage in a
discussion about the current state and the future of the practice of preaching through
the lens of the concept of Baptist identity, thus setting a platform for further reflection
and development of the disciplines of homiletics and hermeneutics amongst Russian
Baptists. Throughout my study | outlined several possible directions for further studies.
