He was dropped from the council in 1969 and two years later the church in Zaporozh’e, where he was serving as presbyter, excommunicated him (albeit not unanimously— seventy-seven votes against Punk, seventeen abstentions) because they suspected his reliability (BL, 9-10/71 in AS 1098). : 55. Senior Presbyter - Tatarchenko had stated in 1960 that Shaptala, then presbyter in Khanzhenkovo (Donets Oblast) impressed him as dedicated to God. By 1963 he was leading an un- registered congregation in Khartsyzsk (which has since been registered while maintaining ties to the CCECB).
