Malin was elected alternate member of the All-Russian Union in 1920 and one of the Baptist representatives to BWA in Stockholm in 1923 (BV, 1/48, pp. 21- 22): Levindanto was secretary of the 1920 All-Russian Congress (Steeves, p. 142); Goliaev served as president of the finance commission in 1922 (Steeves, p. 187). Goliaev’s father, Il’ia Andreevich Goliaev, was a vital link in attempts to legitimize the new union. Goliaev had been president in 1911 and again in 1925-26. When his successor Odintsov was arrested in November 1933 Goliaev again resumed the presidency but did not return from a trip to Kiev in early 1935, Steeves speculatin that he went into hiding. He died in Tashkent in 1942 but shortly before his deat telegramnied his agreement to use of his signature on a joint Evangelical Christian A New Evangelical Union 101 and Baptist letter in supper of the war effort and this letter was taken to indicate his approval of the intended union. (Steeves, pp. 198, 268-70; Kahle, p. 228, mistakenl claims that Ilia Goliaev, rather than Michael his son, signed the 1942 letter with Levindanto requesting union with the Evangelical Christians. ) 37.
