Reimer at the family reunion held at Moundridge, Kansas, on the 31st of July, 1927) Since we are gathered for a family reunion today, it seemed proper that one should learn something about ones ancestors, namely, where they lived, their names, and how they came to this country. I was given the responsibility to record this information. If someone is of the impression that our forefathers have always lived here in America, it may be interesting to know that this is not the case. To add interest to the story I shall go back in our history quite far and name the ancestors on mother’s side of the family first. Our great-grandfather Johann Warkentin was born May 15, 1760, in West Prussia in Dorf-Klein— Mausdorf . Our great grandmother, nee Tissen, was born 1767 in ±he same village. They lived here for a while and later moved to Elbing. They were among the first people to emigrate to South Russia in 1804 and settle in the colony of Molotchna. Great-grandfather took over two lots in the village of Blumenort , which amounted to about 320 acres each. However, because of crop failures, cattle plague, and other misfortunes in their farm program, he gave up farming and took up teaching. This profession he followed in the village of Ladekopp where he died in 1825. In his later years our great-grandfather wrote a song in which he pictures the thorny path our forefathers had to take and the longing in their hearts for their heavenly home above. Grandfather’s name was also Johann Warkentin, born November 28, 1786. Grandmother, nee Neufeldt, was born on October 7, 1788. Though the exact birth place is unknown to me, I know that she was also born in Prussia. The grandparents Warkentin lived in Prangenau near the Molotchna where grandfather Warkentin died in 18
